In the retail industry, appearance is an important factor in buyers’ purchasing decisions. Brick and mortar establishments that find the optimal presentation and display methods for their products tend to perform better than competitors that do not invest in such techniques.

One example of this is the use of LED display lighting in physical retail environments. There are several benefits to using LED light displays in your store, as well as several methods of optimizing your shop lighting.

Using LED Light Displays

LED lights employ light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are small semiconductors that emit visible light when electrical current passes through them. These lights serve as an effective and economical method of illuminating commercial displays and spaces.

The Benefits for Your Business

LED lighting can provide several benefits to your business, including:

  • Increased visual appeal. One of the most significant benefits that LED lighting can bring to your store is enhanced visual appeal for your products. Customers tend to favor products highlighted in clear light that accentuates their packaging features over identical products that are not well-illuminated. Unlike other lighting products, LED lights also tend not to wash out package colors or design.
  • Enhanced ambiance. LED light displays can help create a specific atmosphere that you want your physical space to convey by providing ambient lighting.
  • Energy savings. LED lighting is often more energy-efficient than its fluorescent or incandescent counterparts. Additionally, LED light products can outlast other lighting options by at least double their lifespan, making them more cost-effective.
  • Practical advantages. LED lights may also serve other practical purposes; for instance, LED lights will not bleach packaging material over time, and meat that is kept under LED lights may last up to three or four days longer than meat kept under alternative light sources.

Display Case Lighting

Many stores employ display case lighting, or low voltage strip lighting, to boost their products’ visual appeal. Some factors to consider when examining options for display case lighting include:

  • What is your display case’s profile? What size and type of display case lighting would comfortably fit within the necessary space requirements?
  • Do you plan to install your display case lights yourself, or subcontract this task out to an electrician?
  • Will you need to periodically adjust the lighting level/color after installation?
  • Will your lighting keep cool enough to avoid any potential damage to your product? Will there be any fire hazard from the operational temperature of your display lights?
  • Is energy consumption a concern?

How to Optimize Your Shop Lighting

While LED lighting offers several advantages to retailers over other types of lighting, it is important to optimize its setup and configuration to showcase and encourage the sale of products and enhance the customer experience. The following are some techniques for optimizing your retail shop’s lighting.

store display lighting product focusGeneral Shop Lighting

  • Ensure that your LED lights offer high CRIs. The color rendering index (CRI) is a crucial aspect of effective store lighting. The higher the CRI, the more accurately your lighting will represent the product’s true color, which is especially important when it comes to food and clothing; a shirt or piece of fruit that looks dull and washed out will not be attractive to prospective customers.
  • Keep the most important part of your displays at eye level. The majority of passersby will only focus on the part of the display that is on their general eye level. For maximum appeal, ensure that your lighting focuses on and highlights that section.
  • Create contrast. Using narrower beams of light creates contrast between the product and the background, further garnering customer attention towards it.

Window Display LightingLED light sunglasses display store

  • Use accent and pinpoint lights. Accent and pinpoint lights can create a dramatic atmosphere on the show floor. When using them, they should be between 10–20 times brighter than the surrounding background lighting.

Showcase Display Lighting

  • Light products from the top and back. Lighting products from the top-back of the display case prevents the shadows, which can detract from the details of the products and the general aesthetic of the show floor.
  • Use proper lighting intensities. Intensities for lighting in showcases should be approximately 40 foot candles (fc).

Colored LED Lights

  • Use accent lights according to your target market. Lighting displays that accent, or make your product stand out from its surroundings, can add visual appeal, especially when targeted towards a specific For instance, younger customers generally tend to like mood lights that feature a wide variety of colors, whereas older customers prefer white lights that are soft and warm.
  • Pay attention to CCT. The correlated color temperature of your lights will determine the hue and tone that your display conveys to customers. If you want a warmer, orange/yellow tone, then you will need lights with a lower CCT on the Kelvin scale. Conversely, higher CCT products will emit a more blue-toned light.

Whether your focus is on efficiency, return on investment (ROI), or sustainability, light emitting diode (LED) solutions have a lot to offer. This comprehensive guide will take a deeper look into LED lighting and its benefits over other lighting solutions. In addition, we will address the various uses and applications of LED lighting and its importance in commercial markets.

LED tube lights

Facts About LED Lights

LED lighting passes an electrical current through a microchip, which powers a light-emitting diode. An LED is a type of semiconductor which takes electrons from an electrical current and recombines them with electron holes. This releases photons in a process known as electroluminescence.

The earliest practical use of LEDs was in 1962 in remote control devices, indicator lamps, and seven-segment displays (calculators, digital clocks, electronic meters, etc.). These early LEDs were limited to the color red, but later advancements began to produce a wider variety of colors by adjusting energy levels and bandgaps in the microchips.

Here are a few additional basic facts and attributes of LED lights:

  • LEDs feature direct light production rather than indirect light production through heat
  • The lifespan of an LED light is 25,000-100,000 hours, depending on its type
  • LEDs emit monochromatic light and are available in nearly any color
  • LED lights use 84% less energy than traditional lights

Benefits of LED Lights

The lifespan of LED bulbs and their lower energy usage are certainly major benefits of LED lights, but there is a much longer list of benefits derived from the use of LEDs in place of traditional lighting. These include:

  • Safety. LEDs use 90% of the heat associated with light production, making them cooler and safer.
  • Improved CRI. The color rendering index (CRI) of LEDs is better, which draws out the true color of an object. This can be especially useful in the design and manufacturing environments.
  • The smaller size of LEDs saves space.
  • Design flexibility. Size, color, dimming, and other characteristics allow for greater flexibility in lighting designs.
  • Directional emission. More efficient 180° lighting with no waste behind the fixture.
  • Instant on. LEDs turn on and off instantly and do not degrade because of frequency.
  • Dimming capacity. LEDs can be adjusted from 1%-100% of their capacity.
  • Solid state component. LEDs do not need to be added to in order to function.
  • Lower voltage. LEDs can operate at a much lower voltage than other lighting types.
  • No UV emissions. The majority of emissions from LEDs occur in the visual spectrum, with a small amount of infrared spectrum, and no ultraviolet (UV) energy emission.
  • Eco-friendly. LEDs do not use any environmentally negative gases such as mercury, making them more sustainable.
  • Less affected by temperature. The thermal resistance properties of LEDs allow for a much broader range of temperature extremes without causing degradation.

These and other benefits of LEDs make them a viable alternative to other lighting solutions. Making comparisons between LEDs and competitive lighting types provides an even clearer picture of the advantages LED solutions provide. For an accurate comparison, note the difference in lifespan and lighting efficiency of LEDs in relation to traditional lighting types, as well as some of the other advantages and disadvantages of each.

LED vs. Incandescent Lighting

Lifespan

  • LED: from 25,000- 100,000 hoursincandescent light bulb
  • Incandescent lighting: 1,000- 2,500 hours

Efficiency

  • LED requires 12-13 watts to produce 1000-1,400 lumens
  • Incandescent lighting requires 75 watts to produce the same brightness as an LED.
  • Incandescent lighting is omnidirectional and requires additional reflective devices to direct its beam, making it less efficient than unidirectional LED light.

LED vs. Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL)

Lifespan

  • LED 25,000-100,000 hours
  • CFL lighting 8,000 hours

Efficiency

  • LED requires 12- 13 watts for 1000-1,400 lumens
  • CFL requires 18- 22 watts for 1000-1,400 lumens

compact fluorescent lamp CFL bulb

Disadvantages of CFL

  • CFL lights contain mercury and phosphor, which are hazardous materials that present environmental waste issues.
  • They degrade rapidly when frequently switched on and off.
  • They are omnidirectional and require additional components to direct their beam.
  • CFLs require a warm-up and cooling off period, and also emit a small amount of UV radiation.
  • CRI is significantly lacking.

Advantages of CFL:

  • CFL and other types of fluorescent lighting are common in warehouses, schools, offices, public buildings and other areas where their efficiency far exceeds the cost-effectiveness of incandescent lighting.

LED lighting outperforms the two most common traditional lighting types in efficiency and lifespan. Though the initial investment into LED lighting can be significant, its long-term cost effectiveness balances out the higher initial investment with a significant amount of energy savings and substantially less frequent replacement needs.

Your customers don’t feel comfortable walking through dim or dingy aisles, nor do they want to get a headache from endless bombardment by overly bright fluorescents. Lighting design may seem like a secondary concern – especially for small operations or those just starting out – but there is much more to retail lighting than mere ambiance.

The lighting solution you choose for your retail store can have a notable impact on your customers and their shopping experience. This experience begins the moment customers enter your establishment and ends at the far side of the check-out lane, so choosing the best lighting throughout your entire store is critical.

The Importance of Lighting in Retail

This seemingly simple utility affects the customer experience, directly impacting sales. You want lighting that not only provides a comfortable atmosphere for your clients to roam your store but individual lighting solutions that highlight displays and other marketing initiatives.

POP Displays and Store Fixtures

Point-of-purchase (POP) displays are a common tactic in many advertising campaigns, highlighting the release of a new product line or featuring sales and promotions for brands. By concept, they are used to encourage impulse purchases. Depending on how long the POP display will be in the store, it can be made of wood, plastic, or corrugated materials.

Store fixtures, on the other hand, are permanent fixtures in the store. They come in a wide array of colors, materials, and styles and are used to promote and sell merchandise. These fixtures will be located in prominent locations, such as the ends of the aisle or other high traffic areas. Depending on the store setup and the retail niche, featured products may rotate on store fixtures based on marketing initiatives and inventory concerns.

Your customers won’t buy what they don’t notice, so it’s important to properly highlight these key areas with a comfortable, yet effective lighting solution. LED lights offer ideal lighting for POP displays and store fixtures because they provide:

  • Easy set-upled light ps4 display
  • Cost efficiency
  • Low-temperature operation
  • Last at least 12 months of continuous use, up to 60 months
  • Low maintenance
  • Energy efficiency

LED lights are frequently used in tight spaces behind shelves, within signs, or above display cases and POP displays because they offer flexibility in terms of brightness and work well with many color schemes.

Marketing research supports the use of LED lighting solutions to increase sales. Here are a few examples:

  • German grocery retailer Globus increased POP display sales by 6% in a well-lit promotional area after installing LED spotlights to enhance displays, while using colored lights to attract shoppers to the area increased area visits by 15%.
  • A 21-week test of LED lighting in a Dutch grocer showed increased basket sales of 2% from LED-lit promotional areas.
  • A German fashion retailer increased sales by nearly 12% after installing a lighting system designed to specifically appeal to customers.

Color and Brightness of Light

The luminosity of a light solution can influence the way customers feel in a store. However, there is a careful balance to be struck when installing promotional lighting. While light plays a significant role in how we perceive colors, it is also very important to consider the color of the light itself.

LED light sunglasses display store

  • High-temperature lights (~6500 Kelvin) emit cooler white lights, as you would find as the backlight for electronics.
  • Low-temperature lights (~3000 Kelvin) emit warmer white light, as you would find in homes or kitchens.
  • Neutral temperature lights (4100-5300 Kelvin) are ideal for retail display applications if no specific brand color is involved.

Using a more neutral temperature light can make products more appealing, especially as backlighting or product shelving. Of course, other temperatures can be considered based on specific brand experiences or application.

Effective Retail Lighting Techniques to Consider

Consider the following five lighting techniques to build customer loyalty and entice them to make impulse purchases:

  1. Use effective contrast
  2. Use vertical lighting
  3. Add different lighting styles to create versatility
  4. Highlight products with accent lighting
  5. Incorporate effective backlighting

These best practices will vary by application, however. The appropriate lighting choice will depend largely on the type of store and the products you sell.

For example, the dim comfortable light you might choose above a rack of high-end shirts in a clothing store would not be appropriate to light a shelf of featured best sellers in a bookstore. Lighting selection has as much to do with understanding your product, industry, and customers as it does with understanding the lighting solutions themselves.
